Black Hole 24:29
I’ve only scratched the surface, now it’s time to dive inside It’s time to find the man behind the corners of my mind It’s time to heed the timeless call And time to vanquish all my fears Time to take a trusting fall And honor all the lessons of my blessed childhood’s years It time to find out what it means to really be alive Time to break down barriers and time to take the dive Time to find out what I’m worth And time to see who I can heal Time to take my right of birth Time to take command and time to grab the steering wheel It’s hard to really let things go There’s so much more I want to know But the time has come to be a man And take the challenge If I can I’ll find myself with greatest haste Beyond the fancies of this place It’s time to act what I believe And walk along the path of grace For every time I went and opened up my heart Somebody stole a little piece and left me torn apart With my spirit still exposed, I can no longer hide It’s time to cross the border, time to take a look inside It’s hard to really let things go There’s so much more I want to know But the time has come to be a man And take the challenge If I can With my spirit still exposed, I can no longer hide It’s time to cross the border, time to take a look inside Once you cross the horizon The only way to go is in On the inside I am all that surrounds me There is no difference in between The self and all the things I see I remember what I am How there’s nothing that I’m not And I’m free to be The beauty before me I remember my task I remember my call To listen with great care Share love with one and all I remember my duty I remember my past The places where I came from My spirit everlasts On the inside There is no difference between The things I am And things that I could be I’ll gather all the love inside And let it out for all to see For I know with great power Comes the same responsibility It’s time to really help things grow I know enough to start the show The time has come to be a man I’ll take the future in my hands With all the power of my soul I’ll seek to make my spirit whole I’ll travel through the darkest night To usher in the morning light I’ll sing my songs Into the crystal winter skies And hope to finally realize New ways to open up my eyes Standing on the other side I see the way one story ends I watch as my new world begins I am the soul within

My Drum! 04:14
My drum beats the rhythm of my heart My drum speaks the voices of the past My drum shakes the pillars of the earth My drum makes the groove that everlasts My drum chants the power of my soul My drum frees my mind of all it’s chains My drum wakes the sleepers in the midst My drum brings the thunder and the rain Feel the power Of the beat Get the message Stomp your feet My drum sings the story of my life My drum sets the tempo for my task My drum calls the spirits from the walls My drum destroys the evil masks My drum resonates with dignity My drum sympathizes with the truth My drum draws the people in to dance My drum remembers joyful youth Feel the power Of the groove Hear the message Time to move Time to move! Time to move! Time to move! Time to move!

One day I was busy digging the pit That I’m bound to fall into one of these days And I thought to myself that there’s more in all this Than passing the hours and trying to get paid So I taught a few lessons I met a few cats I planted some flowers And I tried to relax I listened to voices that came from above And I learned a few things about love One day I was angry that life was too hard So I cursed all the gods I could find But I realized I didn’t know all of their names But I’ll always remember mine So I sought to stay humble And I wrote a few poems I signed lots of letters And I rebuilt my home I opened my mind and I saw all the doves And I learned a few things about love Many days I feel lonely, it seems like I’m lost Like no one can hear my heart sing But I write and revise and I will realize The phrase that was destined to ring I agree to be open I hope to stay free I wish to keep growing As I dream the new me I’m trying on a few new pairs of gloves And I’m learning some things about love I’ll give what thrills me The love that fills me There’s no greater power There’s no better hour We can all share the goodness When the fear becomes broken We can care for each other If we hear what’s been spoken We’ll find a new truth where our spirit’s the same Where we forget our fictions and and speak our true names We’ll build things of beauty side by side with our brothers When we remember to love one another I know we can do it If we give it our hearts We’ll find the right path If we get the right start We can offer a smile and share a sweet song We can carry each other and whistle along I’m gonna keep trying There’s still so much to find The journey is a blessing And there’s always more time To learn a few things about love

This is a song for all the mamas in the house The ones who labored So that we could see the light of day I stand before you Because my mother stood before me And had the guts To carry me inside for an 8 month ride Until I was ready to breathe the fresh air I stand before you Because my mother fed me Clothed me Taught me And loved me enough To give me a life worth singing about I don’t always show my gratitude the right ways But let it be known that I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me I love you mom You know what’s cookin You can smell something bakin If you listen for the sound You can hear Mama shakin Not one of us would be here If mama weren’t around So lets sing songs of love and joy When mama comes to town Not one of us would know the ways To eat, to speak, to run and play If mama hadn’t stepped right in Just in time to save the day You know what’s cookin You can smell something bakin If you listen for the sound You can hear mama shakin She’s filled with so much extra love That there’s always something more to share She brought my spirit to the earth So I could taste the summer air She picked me up when I fell down And pushed my stroller through the town She cooked me meals that made me strong I’m not a chef, but here’s a song You know what’s cookin You can smell something bakin If you listen for the sound You can hear mama shakin My mother knows the game and all its many strifes She’s been a daughter, a friend, a mother, a wife She’s soaked up the sunshine and danced between knives This song’s for my mother, I owe her my life You know what’s cookin You can smell something bakin And if you listen for the sound You can hear Mama Shakin!

Sometimes I’m sittin And I get to thinkin That this world Yeah, it’s too much for me But I get to playin And I remember That this world Yeah, it’s just right for me You know I’m always gonna be here In happiness or misery Sometimes I’m lonely And no one’s out there Who can hear My desperate cries at night But I get to playin And I remember I’m not alone There’s others with the light You know we’re always gonna be here Never givin up our fight Sometimes it’s crazy And the skies are crying Oh these times They’re comin on too fast But the winds keep changin And we keep on singin Cuz our lives We know they’re gonna last Yes we’re always gonna be here Long after all these days have passed I said we’re always gonna be here Long after all these days have passed You know we’re always gonna be here Long after all these days have passed

Hey Everybody! (Hey Casey!) Everybody needs some Funk! (And everybody needs friends!) A boogie in the basement Only gets the funk so far Without some buddies to build a groove It’s hard to be a star I’m calling up the family band To bring about a bold new sound We’ve got the vibes to satisfy So everybody get down! It’s never easy To be out there on your own Quit tryna tease me I’m just looking for a home Don’t you know it I’m not the means to all your ends Go on and grow it Everybody needs friends! If you wanna blow your funky horn You gotta seek a solid beat I found a bangin bluesy band Funkin down the street I can’t forget the way I felt The first time that I heard the sound Of Shaw’s Bar on a Monday night Dr. Funk was laying it down The nights get lonely when nobody comes around The days get longer when my habits let me down Life’s a little better when you’re on my side of town It’s time to come together and listen for the sound Let’s build it from the bottom one more time We’ve got a little more record and a few last rhymes Thanks for tuning in and gettin down with the groove Prepared with care by the Captain, for you I’ve got a little favor that I need to ask For the time when the music ends Call up a special someone who you miss from your past Cuz you know everybody needs friends Everybody Needs Friends! Everybody Needs Friends! Everybody Needs Friends! Everybody Needs Friends!

about

This is a record of gratitude and love.

Learning to love means a lot of things, and as the words imply, it’s a forever incomplete process. The nice thing I’m finding is that the loving path is one of great joy, fulfillment, and serendipity. There have been countless times when I’ve struggled to love myself, my family, my friends, and my world. Somehow, though, I can’t think of a time when I didn’t love music, so that would be the tool for this journey of uniting the aspects of my loving spirit.

I owe my joy over the past year to the beautiful people around me. Teaching at Patrick Henry High School has brought me in touch with a huge community of compassionate and motivated students, teachers, and phamily members who help me bear witness to the power of love every day. Getting back into the classroom made me feel alive again, and immediately helped the gratitude start coming back to my life. I started working on Black Hole as soon as winter break began, and the rest of the record followed throughout the spring. I owe special thanks to my coworkers Pete, Christopher, and Sid and my after school jammers for sharing the music, smiles, and laughs that make life worth living.

Riding the school theme, I’ve been thinking back a lot to my own school days. The cover art for this record comes to you courtesy of Rebecca Doherty- one of the most inspiring teachers of my youth. Thank you for exemplifying the fun and joy and being an artist, I feel blessed to have been in your classes so many times over the years. Though I wound up a musician, I learned many of my most important lessons about creativity in your classroom. Thanks for all that you’ve done for so many kids for so many years, and thank you for making this cover.

Two songs on this record have specific targets of my gratitude, the first being Mama’s Shakin It. My mom has always supported my music, been my biggest fan since before I was any good, and helped me navigate all the twists and turns of life. I realized one day that I’ve written songs about scoundrels, songs about lovers, and songs about myself, but never a song for my mom. This was an essential track for this album. The music was recorded with the banjo and mandolin gifted to me by my mother, never used before this tune.

Everybody Needs Friends is a tribute to the people who make my life fun! I only wish I could have included more friends on the track, but springtime got a little crazy this year! The Monday night blues jam at Shaws Bar and Grill provided a sanctuary for me when I was without a musical home. It’s like a lighthouse for jammers around the city, and the house band features some of the finest musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. It’s with pride and gratitude that I present George Moye and Allen Kirk on bass and drums. Thank you for providing me with so many rich and wonderful experiences over the last 2 years. I'd also like to extend deep gratitude to Jason Madeiros- sorry we couldn't make it work for this song, but thank you for so much musical inspiration, encouragement, and consistently phenomenal guitar playing.

Also featured on the track are my forever friends Marcus Bell and Reid Ziolkowski on guitar and vocals. We grew up together, played on little league teams together, went on campouts, and played first concerts. It blows my mind that we are again in the same city, again playing music together, and still supporting each other as brothers. Thank you for your friendship. Finally, I have also featured a new friend, Mike Arcenaux. Mike approached me a year ago to become a better horn player- my own journey of growing as a musician, friend, and human being is better when he’s around. I’m excited to present his debut as a session artist on alto sax.

Love is the ultimate power, let’s help it grow!
